Australian Mini Cooper
A LEGEND RETURNS
Not since 1978 had the Mini been available in Australia. Australian Mini Cooper first gained compliance for the Rover Mini in 1997 and in that time have proudly completed hundreds of cars enabling owners to experience the thrill of driving this exceptional motor car. The Mini has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1959. In those days the 850 cc motor and drum brakes were terrific for Australia. The car was just at home in the city as the country and moved people all over.
There were various models introduced over the years and these included the Mini Cooper and Cooper S. These vehicles went on to rewrite the record books all over the world and won such prestigious events as the Bathurst 500 mile race and the Monte Carlo rally. As the years progressed the Mini became more refined. Later models came standard with disc brakes, radios and a heater – a far cry from the original.
The 1970’s were tough years for the motor industry and in Australia the Mini was to become its most high profile victim. In 1978 as a result of reduced sales and poor management the Mini ceased production in Australia. Overseas the building of Minis continued however it seemed their days were numbered.
(Under bonnet of a 1990’s EFI Mini. If this looks crowded imagine the Japanese spec cars that also had air conditioning!!) Now as the Mini headed into the 1990’s the most drastic changes were about to take place. With more stringent vehicle testing introduced around the world, the Mini was redesigned again. With the addition of fuel injection and unleaded petrol – the Mini was back! Unfortunately these new Mini’s were not available in the mass market in Australia. Because of the age and design on the Mini, Australian compliance approval was never going to be easy however, with determination and hard work, we were able to gain this approval for the Mini Cooper and Cooper S. At Australian Mini Cooper we can organise Compliance for the Rover Mini This compliance includes the fuel injected Mini and Mini Cooper manufactured between 1991 and the last models made in 2000. |
